The book discusses four countries and four central bankers. I just wanted to read this particular piece of history (central bankers, Pre-Post/WWI). I had zero inkling about the book’s fame. Was just browsing online when the title caught my attention. I had never heard of Liaquat Ahamed, nor about this book. To be blunt and no fault of hers, I can’t do that. Dune saga book5/12/2023 ![]() ![]() There are many more Dune novels than there are for Middle-earth, stretching in two directions in time out from the original Dune book of 1965. But new fans coming to the books by way of the film may struggle to find the proper starting place. With the first half of Denis Villeneuve’s adaptation out and doing brisk business, Dune may finally achieve a comparable breakthrough in pop culture. They are similarly epic in scope, both authors died before completing the final expansions of their worlds, and both had sons who took up the mantle. Tolkien may have recoiled at this remark if he ever heard it, but the two works have certainly had comparable impacts on their respective genres (even if Lord of the Rings penetrated further into the wider culture). Clarke, once said of Frank Herbert’s Dune, “I know of nothing comparable to it except Lord of the Rings.” J.R.R. ![]() Editor's Note: The following contains spoilers for the Dune book series.Fellow sci-fi scribe, Arthur C. ![]()

A Place Called Winter by Patrick Gale5/12/2023 ![]() And yet it is here, isolated in a seemingly harsh landscape, under the threat of war, madness and an evil man of undeniable magnetism that the fight for survival will reveal in Harry an inner strength and capacity for love beyond anything he has ever known before. ![]() ![]() ![]() We followed up with Stiglitz after the Davos panel, and he told us that Friedman's assertion "was not based on any economic theory." He then gave some background on the origins of this debate. In his highly influential 1962 collection of essays, " Capitalism and Freedom," Friedman proclaimed that in a free economy, "there is one and only one social responsibility of business - to use its resources and engage in activities designed to increase its profits so long as it stays within the rules of the game, which is to say, engages in open and free competition, without deception or fraud." When Blodget opened the discussion to the panel he had assembled, Columbia University's Joseph Stiglitz remarked, "I want to emphasize that it was, in this period, not only activist shareholders but Milton Friedman," the late economist and fellow Nobel laureate, who was to blame for this prevailing ideology. The current state of inequality in the United States, he explained, is largely linked to a reaction to 1970s stagnation that has gone on for too long, where chasing quarterly profits has resulted in a toxic short-termism. It often indicates a user profile.Īt the World Economic Forum's annual meeting in Davos, Switzerland in January, Business Insider CEO Henry Blodget made the case why it's time for a "better capitalism." Book the line of beauty5/11/2023 ![]() Nick becomes Toby's sister Catherine's confidante, securing his place in the house, and loses his virginity spectacularly to Leo, a black council worker. The first section shows Nick moving into the Notting Hill mansion of Gerald Fedden, one of Thatcher's Tory MPs, at the request of the minister's son, Toby, Nick's all-too-straight Oxford crush. ![]() The protagonist, Nick Guest, is a James scholar in the making and a tripper in the fast gay culture of the time. The book is divided into three sections, dated 1983, 19. To shade in the nuances of class, Hollingsworth uses plot the way it was meant to be used-not as a line of utility, but as a thematically connected sequence of events that creates its own mini-value system and symbols. Among its other wonders, this almost perfectly written novel, recently longlisted for the Mann Booker, delineates what's arguably the most coruscating portrait of a plutocracy since Goya painted the Spanish Bourbons. ![]()
